Ennio Fazioli “Parioli” executive office chair for MIM Roma, Italy, 1970s

A less commonly seen double-back executive version of the Parioli office chair, designed by Ennio Fazioli for MIM Roma, Italy. The Parioli series was introduced in 1960 and remained in production for several decades, appearing in numerous variations and later developments. This executive version is distinguished by its unusual double-back construction, with two separately formed upholstered sections set within sculpted outer shells. The chair is upholstered in black leather with deep button tufting to the seat and both back sections. The outer shells are finished in high-gloss black, creating a strong contrast with the soft leather upholstery. Rectangular open armrests further emphasize the chair’s architectural character. Earlier examples of this double-back executive version are documented with a four-leg metal base. This later execution features a five-star swivel base with castors, together with height adjustment and an integrated tilt mechanism. The height is operated by the side lever. The same control also releases a subtle backward movement of the seat and back, allowing the chair to tilt only a few centimetres rather than fully recline. A separate adjustment knob underneath regulates the resistance of this movement. A distinctive and relatively uncommon version of Fazioli’s long-running office seating programme for MIM Roma, combining sculptural shell construction, deeply upholstered leather and a more developed executive adjustment mechanism.
