Unsigned Mediterranean Modernist Oil Painting, France, Mid-20th Century

This striking unsigned oil painting evokes the spirit of Southern French modernism, with its richly layered, almost relief-like surface, vivid Mediterranean palette, and dreamlike composition in which terrace, garden, and still life dissolve into one another. Executed in oil on panel, the work is distinguished by its expressive materiality and thick impasto, giving the surface an exceptional tactile presence. The painting came to Hungary from the estate of László Szabó (1917–1984), the Hungarian-born sculptor who lived and worked in France for a significant part of his career. Szabó was active within the Paris art scene, and documented exhibition contexts placed his work alongside major figures such as Jean Arp, Alexander Calder, Henry Moore, Henri Laurens, and Constantin Brâncuși, while his sculptures were also shown together with works by Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. Although the painting remains unsigned, its painterly force, material richness, and provenance suggest the hand of a serious artist.
