Vase by Louis-Étienne Desmant (Choisy-le-Roi 1844, Subles 1902), former director of the Choisy-Le-Roi earthenware factory. At the beginning of the years, 1890, he began working with Noron sandstone (14) and developed a line of flamed objects with metallic reflections taking up the themes of the Bayeux tapestry in his Subles workshop. A true ceramic researcher, he is one of the great masters of the discipline in France at the end of the 19th century. When he died, his son Lucien took over production. Some of the pieces by Desmant, father and son, are on display at the Musée d'Orsay today. The collection dedicated to the Bayeux tapestry is typical of the art nouveau period in its style and in its objective: to develop the outlet for tourist souvenirs in the face of a decline in demand for usual artisanally produced earthenware. This magnificent signed vase is typical of this production, entirely handmade by one of the great French craftsmen of his time.
