Knoll armchair model barcelona design by mies van der rohe. The knoll studio barcelona chair is an iconic design by ludwig mies van der rohe. In 1929 ludwig mies van der rohe was asked to design the german pavilion for the world exhibition in barcelona. He created a rhythmic whole in which the barcelona chair, then still called mr90, was central. The distinctive cross frame is based on curul seats from ancient rome and is combined with contemporary materials. For example, the graceful frame is formed from chrome, which has been polished by hand to a mirror-like finish. The back and seat are interwoven with bands of cow leather, which are painted in the same color as the seat cushions. These foam cushions are covered with top quality leather. All 40 patches are seamed by hand and fitted with buttons, all from one piece of leather. Although the chair was first produced in germany, mies donated the production rights to his good friend florence knoll in 1948. A signature and knollstudio logo can be found on the frame. The only thing that has changed since the first version is the comfort, which has been significantly improved by means of extra wadding.
