Mid-Century Italian Glass Decanter by Wayne Husted for Stelvia, 1960s

A sculptural green glass decanter from the Antiqua collection, designed by American designer Wayne Husted for Stelvia in Empoli, Italy, during the 1960s. The bottle features a distinctive rectangular body with rounded shoulders, a spherical stopper, and a richly embossed grapevine motif. Its deep green glass, pronounced relief, and contrasting highlights give the piece a strong sculptural presence. The decanter was hand-blown and molded in Italy in the 1960s and retains its original Made in Italy label. About the designer: Wayne Husted is best known for his influential work as a designer for Blenko Glass Company in the United States. During the 1960s, he also designed glassware for Stelvia, an Italian glass manufacturer established in the 1950s in the Empoli area of Tuscany, near Florence. His designs for the company were produced as part of the Antiqua collection, distinguished by its substantial forms and strongly textured surfaces. Empoli became an important centre for Italian decorative glass during the mid-century period. Its manufacturers produced colourful glass vessels, decanters, and decorative objects for both domestic and international markets. Stelvia's collaboration with Husted brought an American design sensibility to Italian glassmaking, with much of this production intended for the American market. This example combines the distinctive relief decoration of the Antiqua collection with the saturated green glass associated with Italian decorative glass of the period. Dimensions.
