Ettore Sottsass Jr, born September 14, 1917 in Innsbruck and died December 31, 2007 in Milan, was an Italian architect and designer. In 1958, called by Adriano Olivetti, he became a consultant designer in charge of the Electronics Division. In this capacity, he participated in the creation of the first Italian computer, the Elea 9003, for which he received the Compasso d'Oro Award in 1959. He designed several electric typewriters such as the Tekne 3 and the Praxis 48 (1964) characterized by their sobriety and abrupt lines. In 1969, he designed, with Perry A. King, the red Valentine typewriter considered one of the most significant creations of 20th-century design. A light machine that could be transported in a briefcase, it seduced with its playful appearance inspired by pop art. In 1973, he created Synthesis 45, a new office furniture system made up of simple, modular elements. When Roberto Olivetti succeeded his father, he offered Sottsass the opportunity to become artistic director of a new design office that would allow him to maintain his autonomy while continuing his collaboration with Olivetti. He held this position until 1982.".
