These two handmade head vases represent the famous Moorish heads of Sicily. Traditionally hand-painted and embellished with golden details. The heads, along with other items for sale in my shop, are entirely handmade by me and are in perfect condition. The legend of the Moorish heads dates back to the 11th century, during the Moorish rule in Sicily. One day, a beautiful and honourable young girl living in Palermo was tending to the plants and flowers on her balcony. Suddenly, a passing Moorish merchant fell in love with the beautiful girl, who immediately returned his affection. They began a love story until she discovered that he already had a wife and children waiting for him in his homeland. She suddenly became mad with jealousy, and one night, while he was sleeping, she thought of a way to keep him with her forever! She therefore cut off his head and cleverly decided to use it as a vase to grow her magnificent basil plant. People passing by her balcony began to admire her flourishing basil plant and became jealous of the beauty of her plants, so much so that they started forging colourful clay pots in the shape of heads, wishing to have the same magical green thumb. Today, these vases represent Sicilian ceramic art around the world.
