Presented here is an original anglo-indian british army hand carved walnut military campaign nest of side tables. The original paper label is underneath and states " made by ganemede srinagar kashmir b. India n. 385". This would date the tables to british indian pre 1947. All three table tops are hand carved with a round crest featuring two crossed flags surmounted by an imperial crown and the letters c h I representing the british cavalry 21st lancers (empress of india) circa 1901-1922. The set is composed of 3 tables: the external & middle have a rectangular top while the smaller is square. All three tables were handmade in solid walnut, typical of the forests of kashmir. The surface wood has attractive swirls and wave patterning that come from wood knots & burls. The edges of the tops are finished with a stepped border. The frames have solid joints and stretchers for stable construction. The legs have a square profile finished in a bulbous form with a small square section at the bottom. The slight differences between the legs is understandable as this table was hand carved. These tables are in very good condition for the age. The antique patina on the wood has been preserved. The surfaces are smooth and have a warm rich colour, with no damages and only minor superficial marks in line with age & wear. The frames are sound & strong.
