Pair of lacquered wood Chippendale chairs, after Pierre Lottier, 1970s – Spain

Exceptional pair of Chippendale-style chairs, with a red lacquered wooden structure in the Andalusian manner, following the style of the prestigious French designer Pierre Lottier, from around the 1970s. Orientalist decorations with gilded chinoiseries. Their structure is robust, with curved front legs, known as "cabriole legs." They follow the English Chippendale style, a furniture style named after Thomas Chippendale (1718 – 1779), one of the great English cabinetmakers. In summary, it is a blend of rococo, neoclassical, and baroque styles with some oriental influences. It is an elegant, sophisticated, and majestic style. It is characterised by the predominance of wood, particularly noble woods, often associated with the use of high-quality textiles, usually printed, where oriental patterns and scenes were paramount. The curved legs are one of its trademarks. One of them has lost the crossbar. One can also recognise the influence of Pierre Lottier, a French designer and architect born in 1888, in a France that was soon to become the epicentre of an artistic revolution. One of the distinctive features of his style and work was his ability to use exotic and rare materials in his creations. Precious woods, fine lacquers, ivory, and other luxury materials combined in his hands to form furniture that was not only functional but true works of art. His style was a fusion of modern and traditional, allowing him to create pieces that were both timeless and emblematic of his era.
