Rare to find, antique (circa1870) porcelain tennis set teacup and saucer by english company copeland (spode). Tennis sets were introduced circa mid 19th century, when tennis became popular form of entertainment. Wealthy spectators could enjoy their tea and sandwiches thanks to elongated saucer. This set is decorated by expensive 'groundlaying' process (hand applied uniform colour) with cornflower blue glaze and hand painted gold trims. Bottom of the saucer has a sea shell as a foot. Marked with copeland mark and impressed marks. Very good antique condition, considering the age of the item. No chips, cracks or crazing. There is some discolouration, yellow hue in few places and some wear of the blue glaze. Minimal wear of the gold trim. There is a small hole on the cup, next to a bottom of the handle which seems to me a manufacturing defect. Please see photos. Happy to provide more photos if necessary. Dimensions: cup diameter: 6cm/2.35in. Cup height: 6.5cm/2.55in. Saucer lenght: 20.2cm/7.9in. Saucer width: 12cm/4.7in. Saucer height: 2.2cm/0.85in. Please bear in mind that the actual colurof the item might be slightly different than shown on the photos due to variations in monitor and browser settings.
