This pretty little square-section vase is a very fine example, well-balanced, of Fat Lava ceramics: the brutalist aspect of the lower part with its thick, bubble-splattered glaze, although predominant in terms of surface, is softened by the flamed glaze, which is smooth to the touch and in warm colours of yellow and orange that flow over the granular part. The term Fat Lava takes on its full meaning here; one can almost feel the movement of the hot lava descending, cooling, and then solidifying. This vase likely dates from the 1950s or 60s and appears to be a handcrafted piece, quite obscure at least, as I have not found others in my research to identify the ceramicist. Indeed, it is not stamped Bay Keramic or Jaspa, nor even West Germany (I removed and then replaced the foam pad under its base), which seems to me a good sign in this case, a sign that it may not have been produced in dozens or even hundreds of copies. However, its geometric, rectangular shape does suggest a German origin (Bauhaus) rather than Vallauris, where ceramists also produced Fat Lava but whose forms were often more organic and colours more "eye-catching". It is in fairly good overall condition, with no major chips but some signs of age and use: two small nicks on the glaze at the top edge of the vase, a small chip or lack of original glaze on an edge about 2 cm below the top edge of the vase, and two small burst bubbles inside the vase (original). This vase measures 16.5 cm in height and 4.5 cm on each side.
