Josef Hoffmann Vienna Secession Oval Table, Kohn or Thonet, circa 1900

An elegant Vienna Secession oval table attributed to Josef Hoffmann, dating from circa 1900, with production attributed to Jacob & Josef Kohn or Thonet. The table is a refined example of the progressive Central European design language emerging at the turn of the 20th century. Its combination of geometric clarity, functional construction and bentwood craftsmanship reflects the transition from Jugendstil and Art Nouveau toward Viennese modernism. Constructed from beech wood and beech plywood, the piece features an oval tabletop supported by four slender rounded legs, an integrated intermediate shelf and a distinctive cross-shaped base. The restrained architecture gives the table a light yet sculptural appearance from every angle. The dark finish beautifully emphasizes the natural grain of the beech and complements the simplicity of the form. The design is attributed to Josef Hoffmann, while production is attributed to Jacob & Josef Kohn or Thonet. The original manufacturer’s label or stamp is no longer present. The table has been carefully refurbished and finished with traditional shellac polish, retaining its authentic historic character.
