Carl Fagerlund: Many museums, churches, and major corporate headquarters house the works of the Scandinavian modernist lighting designer Carl Fagerlund. Initially a professor of illustration, Fagerlund transitioned to the lighting world in the 1940s with the advantage of having an artist's eye. Today, his table lamps, chandeliers, sconces, and other lighting fixtures enrich homes and continue to captivate collectors worldwide. In the early 1940s, Fagerlund taught drawing to budding artists at Solbacka läroverk, a private Swedish boarding school inspired by similar institutions in the UK. Shortly thereafter, he accepted a job designing provocative sconces and other wall lights in brass and textured glass for a manufacturing company in Stockholm called ASEA (Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget, or General Swedish Electric Company). However, Fagerlund is best known for his work at Orrefors Glassworks, a legendary glass factory in Småland that gained worldwide fame for its products after showcasing a range of decorative objects and art glass at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts - the grand design fair that drew global attention to Art Deco. C. Fagerlund joined Orrefors in 1946 and designed, for over three decades, pendants, recessed lighting, a range of Murano glass works, and other richly complex modernist lighting fixtures.
