Rustic hand-carved wooden bench with organic shape, 1940s

This bench was hand-carved from a thick block of dark wood in the 1940s, following the wabi-sabi sensibility that favours irregular and organic shapes over strict symmetry. The top follows the natural curve of the wood instead of a straight, rectangular line, tapering at the ends and widening towards the centre, so that no edge repeats the same profile. Four round, open legs, hand-turned, splay outward from the bottom and are joined with visible wooden dowels, flush-fitted into the seat. The wood has a deep brown tone with reddish hues, and the grain runs freely across the surface, following the shape of the trunk or root from which it was cut. Wide enough to seat two people or serve as an elongated side table, this bench fits well in an entryway, hallway, or at the foot of a bed, and its sculptural silhouette also works as a pedestal for objects or plants in a living room. Pieces like this, carved rather than assembled from industrial boards, are typical of mid-century rural workshops that valued irregular grain and knots as part of the design rather than considering them defects.
