Antique rotating bookcase by Seymour Easton 1859-1916

We are delighted to offer for sale this very rare, highly collectible rotating library piece from the antique Victorian era, by Seymour Easton 1859-1916 Tabard Inn. It is probably the finest and most collectible rotating librarian's furniture in the world, and it is also the largest I have ever seen. Hand-carved from solid oak, it features two sides dedicated solely to books, and then two sides with inspiring quotes engraved. "Be True University" is engraved at the top with open shelves below (side 1), "Books Carlyle" is engraved at the top with six shields below: "Biography", "Poetry", "History" on the left; "Sociology", "Art", "Mechanics" on the right (side 2), "Is n Collection of" is engraved at the top with open shelves (side 3), "Of These Days" is engraved at the top followed by six shields, a plaque "With all the red tape on the box" in the centre, on the left "Fiction", "Politics", "Commerce" and on the right "Travel", "Science", "Religion" (side 4). Seymour Easton 1859-1916 made these pieces around 1900. Easton launched the Tabard Inn Library, a subscription library with stations in the form of these rotating pieces located in pharmacies and other commercial establishments across the United States. We have cleaned, waxed, and polished the piece; the rotating mechanism works perfectly. The frame is solid and stable, and it shows a lovely honest patina from over 120 years of use. Dimensions: Height: 196 cm, Width: 68 cm, Depth: 68 cm (measurements taken at the widest point). Condition: Good, wear consistent with age and use, slight discolouration.
