Vintage naturalist engraving depicting an Asian elephant (Elephas indicus, Cuv.), taken from an old edition of the famous Universal Dictionary of Natural History directed by Charles d'Orbigny and initially published in Paris in 1849. This print, dating from the early 20th century, faithfully reproduces the original plates, with high quality line work and colouring. Titled Mammals, Pl. 9 B., this plate illustrates the species in a stylised oriental setting. The drawing is signed Ed. Travies (artist) and Fortier sc. (engraver), with the printer Polliau imp. mentioned. The work is framed under glass in a modern black frame with a mount.
