Exceptional 17th-18th century Hispano-Mudéjar bowl/plate, framed in hammered brass. This Hispano-Muslim or Mudéjar/Moorish earthenware plate (a term used in Spain to describe ceramic production after the Reconquista) is a remarkable example of Moorish ceramics. The center is decorated with stylized Arabic calligraphy. The dominant color is coppery green (a very characteristic color of this type of ceramic), with touches of manganese brown, all on a light background. The tin glaze gives it an opaque and glossy appearance. This is a deep plate or bowl, both functional and decorative. The detail of the hammered brass bands is essential. This type of mounting, called "setting" or "framing, " was common for two reasons: It was a traditional technique for repairing and reinforcing broken or cracked ceramic pieces, especially the most valuable ones. The metal encircled the edge or followed the line of the crack. Excellent overall condition for its age. The ceramic shows the wear marks, imperfections, and brushstrokes characteristic of the handcrafted production of the period. Dimensions: 24 X 5.5 cm.
