Beautiful ornate english 'wheel back' windsor chair, elm and beech, united kingdom, first half 19th century, ca 1840, signed on the back with the initials j.g. The windsor chair, also called farmhouse furniture, the name windsor probably originated from the fact that the first chairs were made of wood that came from the forests of windsor castle. They are always made from indigenous woods such as oak, elm, beech, ash and the less common yew wood. The arm and backrests are formed from steam-bent pieces of wood, a saddle-shaped seat that is very comfortable to sit in, the bars of the backrest are incorporated in the (solid) seat, a single h-bar connection at the bottom, in short, a fantastic piece of craftsmanship ! This chair is in beautiful antique condition, still very sturdy, signs of age and use consistent with age, old traces of woodworm (they always have) in the backrest, some old repairs, at the bottom of the seat, 2 nails halfway the front legs, but nothing disturbing, the chair still exists and is completely original, which is remarkable in itself, check the photos for more details! Dimensions: lh 60x48x98cm, seat height 46cm.
