Vintage Swedish wooden bowl by Johnny Mattsson, 1959

He often reinterpreted traditional and historical objects with a Mid-century design twist, such as this traditional bowl known as an 'Ölgås' made from pine. An 'Ölgås' is a wooden bowl with a bird neck handle, used on festive occasions to pass around beer, a tradition dating back to the Vikings. His practice is characterized by a strong respect for natural materials, allowing the grain, texture, and tone of the wood to guide the final form.
