Hudson chair by Philippe Starck for Emeco

The hudson chair, designed for the hudson hotel in new york, is the first collaboration between emeco and starck. Starck described the chair as "washing the details of the navy chair." hudson is part of moma's permanent collection. Philippe starck was one of the first designers to take the navy chair out of its original context and place it in modern design-oriented environments. Gregg buchbinder of emeco was in the audience during a speech by philippe starck at the icff in new york in 1999. Later in the hallway, gregg saw starck and said, "mr. Starck, thank you for using our chairs at the paramount hotel." after thinking for a moment, starck asked, "the navy chair. Do you own the business. I thought he belonged to a group of army guys. I'd like to design a chair for emeco. Thus began a close, enduring and prolific relationship between emeco and philippe starck - a relationship that launched emeco's transformation from a u.s. Navy supplier into one of the world's leading design furniture brands. Philippe starck's hudson chair, created for the hudson hotel nyc, was emeco's first new design in more than 50 years. Starck taught emeco's craftsmen a new skill: hand polishing. Starck continued to design for emeco and created the emeco stool, the kong chair, the heritage stackable chair and the icon chair. In 2012, emeco and starck collaborated on the broom chair, which is 90% industrial waste recovered. Hudson chairs are handmade. Each piece is unique with subtle differences. Aluminium is lightweight and durable. Today this model is manufactured only on demand by emeco and sold at the retail price of 1183 t.t.c.
