Here is a very beautiful terracotta ceramic with a lovely cream and cobalt blue glaze, the result of fine craftsmanship both in shaping the clay to give it this very particular form and in glazing. It is a mortar accompanied by its wooden pestle, but it could also be used as an original catch-all. The mortar is very heavy and thick, weighing no less than 1.6 kg! Solid, it will be perfect for grinding seeds, herbs, or even nuts and almonds. The pestle came with the mortar, but I obviously do not know if it is the original one. This ceramic is not signed, which is surprising for such beautiful work, but I have found traces of similar ceramics, so it could be from a Provençal potter who made it about twenty years ago (and I am convinced that with more searching, we could find the potter as its glazing is very distinctive; if I find an answer, I will add it here, edit new info: it could also be of Catalan origin and what I thought was a simple mark under the base, in the shape of a C, could be a signature. Indeed, I recently acquired a salad bowl with the same decoration, which has a similar mark). This ceramic is in very good condition, with no cracks, just three tiny chips in the glaze on the points, but on one hand, this does not hinder its use, and on the other hand, they are not noticeable since the potter made the aesthetic choice to let the clay show through on certain portions of the outer edge (the brown lines are therefore original, and they are smooth as they are under the glaze). The mortar measures approximately 15.5 cm on each side, about 21 cm from one point to another (measured diagonally) with a height of 9.5 cm; the walls measure at least 1 cm in thickness at the rim and thicken further as you approach the bottom. The pestle measures 20.5 cm in length.
