Zanuck, based on the eponymous book by Cornelius Ryan, published in 1959. The film chronologically traces the events of the Allied landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944, preceded by the final preparations of the previous evening. It presents the different theaters of operations, from the point of view of the Allies and the Germans, and different categories of participants: from command centers to ordinary soldiers, including junior officers and resistance forces, all punctuated by numerous true anecdotes.
