Superb vintage white earthenware ginger jar decorated with large orange flowers (peonies?) and fitted with a matching lid. Inspired by traditional Asian style, this large container is as decorative as it is functional. In China, these jars, called simply “hu, ” were used for centuries to store a range of products, from herbs and spices to precious objects. The term “ginger jar” was coined in the West, reflecting the common use of these jars to store ginger, a precious spice. These jars, with their high shoulders, egg-shaped shape, and domed lids, were not only utilitarian objects; they also held deep symbolic meaning. The colors and patterns of the jars were often chosen for specific reasons. For example, a yellow ginger jar symbolized imperial power, with yellow being reserved exclusively for the emperor. White and blue jars, with patterns representing fertility and happiness, were commonly given as wedding gifts. These jars were meant to last a lifetime, passed down from generation to generation like precious family heirlooms. An original gift idea for decoration enthusiasts or lovers of antique objects.
