Condition: Nickel-plated tubular steel frame. The rattan weaving shows slight damage. Manufacturer: Tecta Design: Marcel Breuer (1902–1981) Model: D40 Condition: Nickel-plated tubular steel frame. The rattan weaving shows slight damage. Description: Marcel Breuer designed this iconic chair in 1928. A characteristic stylistic element of this Bauhaus classic is the S-curve of the backrest. Its construction is based on the principle of "arch-oscillation-counter-oscillation, " where each curve of the tubular steel has its counterpart. This technique harmoniously combines dynamism and lightness. Breuer, then head of the Bauhaus furniture workshop in Dessau, emigrated to the United States in 1933 due to his Jewish heritage. There, he co-founded the Harvard University Graduate School of Design with Walter Gropius and became one of the most renowned architects of his generation.
