These jugs were ordered at the end of the 19th century by Watson & Co., a department store in Salisbury. To give them a local historical anchor, the shop asked Doulton to add heraldic motifs typical of the region. The medallion adorned with this blue and white motif (representing a stylised medieval trademark and a bird) corresponds to the oldest version used in this series, produced between 1888 and 1921. • The characteristic brown and green glaze of these flambé stonewares is particularly thick. If it accumulated under the base during firing, it may have completely filled and obscured the engraved or stamped inscriptions. • Production variants: Some initial series or second-choice pieces sometimes left the workshop without complete marking. The jug remains indisputably a model of "The Old Sarum Kettle." The relief medallion of John Halle, its particularly ovoid shape, its high handle, and its colour nuances are unique to this manufacture. In good condition.
