Portrait of a man in a black jacket. Pastel by jules girardet (1856-1938) dated 1877. Girardet is a french painter and illustrator from a family of artists of swiss origin. His father paul is an engraver, his older brother eugène is an orientalist painter as is his twin brother, léon. He trained at the école des beaux-arts in paris in the studio of alexandre cabanel. He creates portraits and genre scenes but is mainly known for his historical paintings depicting the revolutionary wars in brittany. His works are in the collections of the art and history museums of cholet, morlaix, quimper and saint-denis (louise michel and the commune). He won a medal at the salon of 1881 as well as at the universal exhibition of 1889. Our drawing is a youthful work. Pastel on paper, signed and dated (18)77 lower right. Sold without frame. Tasks.
