Overview. Early Biedermeier centre table, probably Vienna, Austria, circa 1820. Oval form intended as a saloon or central accent table. Materials & finish. Cherry veneer over solid wood with warm reddish-brown figure. Gilded gold-leaf trim and partly ebonized (black polished) inlaid centre plate. Shellac hand-polished surface. Design details. Intermediate tableau with upward-tapering, partly ebonized and painted decoration. Four carved eagle heads applied to the sides, re-gilded with gold leaf and partially ebonized. Elegant splayed legs joined by a concave X-shaped stretcher meeting at a central hub, offering an open silhouette. Restoration. Completely restored and refinished; surface polished and shellac finished. Patina consistent with age and light wear; restoration details include careful refinishing. Dimensions. Height: 73 cm.
