Modular sofa "Pianura" by Mario Bellini for Cassina, 1970s.

A modular sofa "Pianura" designed by Mario Bellini for Cassina in the early 1970s, a project in which generous upholstered volumes and an exposed wooden structure are combined in a flexible seating system. The low and deep proportions establish a relaxed seating position, while the wide wooden armrests and substantial cushions give the composition a distinctive architectural presence. Designed as a series of independent seating elements, the design allows for different configurations, from a continuous linear sofa to an angular arrangement, offering multiple possibilities for the organisation of the domestic interior. The wooden structure forms a continuous platform beneath the upholstered elements, extending beyond the seats to create wide armrests integrated with rounded edges. The exposed back reveals a carefully constructed frame of solid wood slats, whose alternating tones and visible joints introduce a strong geometric rhythm. Large seat and back cushions, individually upholstered, rest on the structure, their softly rounded profiles contrasting with the precise lines of the wood. The textured light-coloured fabric highlights the generous proportions of the upholstery, while the low rounded black feet subtly elevate the composition above the ground. The accompanying square coffee table, constructed from contrasting wood strips and supported by matching rounded legs, extends the material and formal language of the sofa into a complementary piece of furniture.
