Louis XVI period desk made of fruitwood.
Flat desk from the Louis XVI period - France, late 18th century - Fruitwood, leather, brass, and bronze. More photos to come. This flat desk from the Louis XVI period reflects the elegance and formal rigour characteristic of French furniture from the neoclassical period. Made of fruitwood, it adopts a simple and balanced rectangular silhouette, resting on four tapered legs with a square section, finished with bronze sabots. The corners are accentuated by vertical fluting, an emblematic motif of the Louis XVI decorative repertoire inspired by ancient architecture. The front features three belt drawers, arranged in a horizontal alignment. The drawers are adorned with bronze drop handles, while the central drawer retains a heart-shaped trilobate lock, characteristic of period locksmithing. The belt is delicately highlighted by a brass rod running around its perimeter, providing a subtle contrast to the warmth of the wood. The top is covered in green leather, framed by a moulded wood border, offering a writing surface in line with the original purpose of the piece. The photographs reveal careful construction, harmonious proportions, and measured ornamentation, qualities that fully align with the Louis XVI aesthetic prioritising clarity of lines and restrained decoration. With its generous dimensions, this desk was intended for a study or a reception room, where it could be placed at the centre of the space and used from multiple sides. In excellent overall condition.
