Two women who lived together in a house had a son at about the same time. One baby had died. Both women claimed the living child. They asked solomon to judge. There was no way to show who was telling the truth. Solomon proposed to cut the living child in two and divide the half fairly. One woman was willing to accept that, the other objected and said she preferred to see the child alive in the hands of the other woman. Solomon concluded that the second woman was the real mother and gave her the living child.
