An impressionist landscape. Made during a trip to the south of france, ernest quost gives us here an outdoor study, in pastel on a sheet of paper. It perfectly represents, with its impressionist touch, the contrasts of color specific to southern light. Installed in the middle of nature, a shrub in front of him, he sketches a hilly landscape on a background of blue sky. The landscape sketched by a quick touch of pastel is typical of impressionism and allows a luminous rendering of the landscape at a specific moment. Ernest quost: a master of painting admired by vincent van gogh and claude monet. Painter of landscape, still life, flowers, fruits, pastellist and impressionist, he was most probably the pupil of horace aumont (1839-1864). He debuted at the salon in 1866 and exhibited at the salon des artistes français. Medalist for the first time in 1880 and then in 1882, he was again medalist (silver medal) at the universal exhibition of paris 1889. It was subsequently classified out of competition at the universal exhibitions of 1890 and 1900. During his lifetime, he was adored by the greatest artists of his generation such as vincent van gogh who spoke in glowing terms of his "magnificent roses". Present in many international museums and in many private collections, our pastel is a rare witness to the artistic production of this talented artist.
