A rare and fantastic studio pottery dish by alexandre kostanda (1917-2007). He was one of the leading modernist french ceramic artists of the mid-twentieth century, earthy modernist style was his signature. His design was always simple, but very inspirational. As a leading artist he has influenced many potters and he ran his own studio. This little bowl, which many of his signatures details, including unglazed dark clay, abstract decor, and a characteristic palette of ochre, dark brown, and white details. The bowl is a mix of rustic meets modernism, showcasing fantastic craftmanship it is incredible delicate with amazing galzing. Vallauris is a pottery region in south-eastern france, near cannes. Pottery has been made in this region since ancient times. Yet the area grew as an art pottery centre in the late 19th century, and many companies have flourished there since then. The vallauris group became very famous due to pablo picasso and they were experimenting to produce artistic pieces for everyday use, this often seen as a leading innovative when it comes to mid-century modern art ceramic. It is 13cm (5.11’) in diameter and 4cm (1.57’) high and incised to base: kostanda, vallauris, it is in an excellent condition.
