Antique Bidjar rug known as Gol Farang (foreign flower), circa 1890. Flowers have always flourished on Persian rugs, especially the rose. But Gol-e Farang, as its name suggests, reflects a Western influence (“Farang” being an ancient Persian term for Europe). The first artistic traces date back to the Buyid period, with more precise documents from the Safavid era. Gol-e Farang rugs are known for their naturalistic floral motifs: lush bouquets of red, yellow, pink, and blue roses, often arranged in circular or spinning compositions. Their somewhat impressionistic style particularly appeals to Westerners and is reminiscent of French Gobelins tapestries. The spread of Gol-e Farang designs was stimulated both by local creativity and by European export demand, particularly from France and the United Kingdom. Both urban and rural weavers incorporated this motif, giving rise to regional variations. The Gol-e Farang represents one of the most beautiful cultural crossovers of the Persian rug, where Iranian mastery of composition meets European romanticism. It testifies to the open-mindedness and creativity of Persian weavers, who were able to absorb foreign inspiration without losing their artistic soul. Today, Gol-e Farang rugs remain popular with collectors and interior designers, admired for their charm, warmth, and historical depth. Dimensions: 207x156 cm. Condition: Bar tacks on both sides of the rug. Some scattered wool wear throughout, low wool, light wear on the selvedges. Remains in good overall condition. Rug professionally washed.
