On April 14, 1861 Erhard Junghans founded with his brother-in-law the manufacture of watch spare parts, 'Zeller & Junghans'. They choose to install their plant of the Valley of the Lauterbach, where already their oil, little prosperous mill. It is quickly transformed to soon allow to run the first production machines. The company is however still far from producing complete watches and clocks: it produces initially of parts for clocks to cuckoo of the Black Forest, such as the boxes in wood, bronze plates, needles, glass doors wire hooks, hinges, and the rockers. The first clocks as such are produced in 1866. In the early 1950s, Junghans wishes to entrust the design of something as common as a kitchen clock to an artist. His choice is the Swiss Max Bill, who, in addition to being painter, sculptor, graphic designer, and architect, is also renowned product designer. Born in 1908, the artist studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau and is one of the founders of the Hochschule für Gestaltung of Ulm, school superior of design of the city. Supported by students, Max Bill is therefore developing the first design the House Junghans kitchen clock. This is the beginning of a real success for the traditional company of Schramberg story.
