Antique Japanese display cabinet with sliding glass doors – Taishō–Shōwa period (circa 1920–1950)

Antique Japanese tea cabinet (cha tansu) from the late Taishō period to the early Shōwa period, made circa 1920–1950 from solid wood with sliding glass showcases, designed as a functional piece for storing and displaying tea-related items and everyday objects. During this transitional period in Japan, interiors evolved towards lighter and more practical solutions, where furniture like the cha tansu combined storage, display, and accessibility. These pieces were commonly used in households to organise tableware, tea accessories, and everyday items. The structure features a balanced composition of lower drawers and upper compartments with sliding glass doors, allowing for both protection and visibility. The metal handles and visible joinery reflect a construction that is both robust and refined, typical of early 20th-century Japan. The wood retains a deep patina with natural wear, marks, and variations in hue that enhance its authenticity. The slightly patinated glass accentuates its original character.
