Two green majolica plates from the "leafage" series of wedgwood, depicting vine leaves (sometimes incorrectly described as cabbage leaves) and finished around the edges with a basket weave. Dating from the 19th century: the absence of "made in england" on the back side of the plates indicates that they were made before 1890. Likely they are early examples of this particular design which dates back to the 1860s. Apart from the "wedgwood" stamp, these plates also have the three classic sagger marks, and interestingly two letter markings: "o" under the logo and "x" at the lower part of the plate. The lettering system of wedgwood normally uses three letters that are placed together in a sequence. Pieces that have scattered letters like these were intended for internal use only, indicating things like the name of the potter, lot and decorator. It is therefore impossible to pinpoint their exact month and year of fabrication. Each plate is 20.5 cm in diameter and stands 2 cm tall. In remarkable condition, without any damages and very little signs of wear.
