Old painted popular commode – Austria, around 1900

This popular antique painted wooden chest of drawers with four drawers, featuring polychrome floral and religious decoration, decorative nails, and porcelain knobs, is a piece of folk furniture from the Austrian Alps around 1900. It originates from Austria, from the transitional period between the 19th and 20th centuries, when the tradition of hand-painted furniture remained vibrant in alpine and rural areas. The painted folk furniture of the Austrian and Tyrolean Alps represents one of the richest craft traditions in Central Europe. Painted chests of drawers were essential pieces of trousseau, decorated with floral, religious, and heraldic motifs that identified the family origin and cultural belonging of the owner. The case is made of solid wood with mortise and tenon joints, and the exterior surface is lacquered in a dark burgundy background. On this background, hand-painted bouquets of flowers in pink, blue, and yellow adorn each drawer front. On the first drawer, a female figure—probably a religious image—can be seen framed in the side panel. The edges are decorated with round-headed nails. The knobs are made of moulded white porcelain.
