Louis van-teeffelen teak desk webé edition 1960 in very good condition slight patina on the brass aloysius (louis) allegonda van teeffelen (1921-1972) was a dutch industrial designer who contributed greatly to the mid-century movement in the netherlands. He is best known for his work at the dutch company wébé. Information about louis van teeffelen's life is scarce, but we can state that he was born in 1921 in the former municipality of leewen, which was located in the province of gelderland in the netherlands. Sources state that louis van teeffelen became wébé's chief designer in 1955, but we have little information about his education. As chief designer for wébé, which was located in his hometown, louis van teeffelen introduced the scandinavian mid-century aesthetic to the brand (hence the confusion regarding the designer's danish origin). Cabinets, desks and tables with anthropomorphic handles, sculptural structures have become louis van teeffelen's trademark. His most famous design is pelican armchair (1960s), characterized by its organic teak. This chair is considered one of the classics of dutch design, not to be confused with pelican chair (1939) by danish designer finn juhl. The delicately curved legs of louis van teeffelen's chair are reminiscent of a pelican's legs, and the whole evokes a bird's beak. His other works for wébé include cow horn chair (1950s), scissor chair (1950s), easy chair (c. 1960). But also a wide range of teak dining tables, coffee tables, sideboards, desks, modular shelving systems, teak shelves and cabinets. Many sideboards and small storage units have ceramic decorations on the doors, created by the dutch ceramicist jaap ravelli. Louis van teeffelen left wébé in 1967.
