Ebony column with fluted shaft – classical pedestal, 19th c.
A slender, elegant column or pedestal in ebony. The turned shaft has vertical fluting, after classical models, and is finished with moulded rings. At the top is a square top, at the bottom a square base. The wood is polished on the outside and has a deep black sheen. Columns like this were made in the 19th century to present a bust, sculpture, vase or plant at eye level. The shape and finish are consistent with classically inspired furniture from the second half of the 19th century. The crisp fluting, the slender proportions and the glossy black make this column understated and chic. At 115.5 cm with a compact top, it is ideal for a small sculpture, a bust or a trailing plant. Beautiful in a classic, Hollywood Regency or eclectic interior, and as a graphic black accent in a light, modern interior. Lovely in a hallway, beside a fireplace or in a corner of the living room. Good condition, with signs of age. The edge of the top has a few small knocks and chips where lighter wood shows (photos 8, 9 and 10). Further small scratches and light wear to the edges of the top and base. No cracks in the shaft or missing parts seen. Stands firmly.
