Vintage “Shanghai Weave” Duck Tray, Green Wicker & Carved Wood, 1970s

A charming figural tray in the shape of a duck, hand-woven in the fine “Shanghai weave” technique that China exported in the 1970s and ’80s. The body is tightly woven wicker over a wooden frame, framed by carved wooden feather slats lacquered in deep bottle green. Subtle wear lets the warm undertone glow through along the edges. The gracefully curved neck ends in a hand-painted head with a black crown, an orange beak with a gilt tip, and inset glass eyes. Inside, the natural weave fades softly into green, like light on water. It’s a playful but refined object, equally at home as a vide-poche in the hallway, a catch-all for keys and jewellery, a bread basket, or simply as a sculptural accent on a shelf or coffee table. It fits beautifully into Hollywood Regency, chinoiserie, or eclectic interiors. Dimensions: W 35 × D 26 × H 10 cm. Condition: Good vintage condition.
