Antique 19th century camphor wooden transport box in very good condition. Beautiful warm color and appearance. In the 18th and 19th centuries, camphorwood chests became popular in europe, especially in england and the netherlands. These chests were often used to store clothing, linens and valuables. Camphor wood comes from the camphor tree (cinnamomum camphora), is an aromatic hardwood native to asian countries such as china, japan and vietnam. The wood has traditionally had many uses, including construction and furniture making. The brass fittings on such chests served both a decorative and a functional role. It could be used to secure the coffin and often served as a decorative element with engravings, handles and locks. During the colonial era, camphor wood chests were also used for travel as the wood has the scent of camphor, which has insect repellent properties. Travelers used these chests to protect their clothing and personal belongings from damage during long sea voyages. Nowadays also often used as a coffee table. Origin: asia. Period: late 19th century. Size: 111cm X 59cm X h.58cm.
