Hello, I am offering 2 paintings representing 2 iconic Italian cities: VENICE and ROME. These 2 works from 1930 are signed by Jehan BERJONNEAU (1890-1966), a referenced and valued artist. In the representation of VENICE, one can observe wear on the old walls worn by humidity, as well as light grazing the tops of the façades and reflecting sparklingly in the green water treated with horizontal strokes. In ROME, the movement of the tree foliage gives body to the ancient stone, the light is more diffuse, typical of the end of the day when the sun warms the ochre of the bricks. For VENICE, the framing is tight; the artist uses the red façade of a palace and a bridge spanning the canal to create a "corridor" perspective, whereas for the representation in ROME, the viewpoint is more open with a more "landscape" composition where the monument is set in a green space evoking the grand Roman squares. But it is in the chromatic palette that the dialogue between the two works is richest. BERJONNEAU plays with warm tones for the architectures, contrasted by nature. Frame dimensions: 45 X 37 cm. Artwork dimensions: 41 X 33 cm. Although these 2 subjects differ, BERJONNEAU does not merely paint landscapes; he "masons" his canvases. By opposing the organic red of VENICE to the mineral pink of ROME, he offers a journey rich in history through the two most beautiful cities in Italy.
