This beautiful sweet jar or sugar bowl is made of milky white opaline from the Portieux Vallerysthal Manufacture (common catalogues). This "fair opaline" features a squirrel on an oversized acorn. Dating from the late 19th century or very early 20th century, fair opalines made of pressed-moulded glass were sold at fairs and popular markets. This box comes from the glass and opaline factory of Portieux - Vallerysthal; this box can be found in the 1907 catalogue. In two parts, it was used to hide small sweets, dragées, or chocolates... The details are precise: the squirrel's fur is well defined; the acorn is placed on an oak leaf, and the base of the acorn has diamond points. The squirrel holds a small acorn between its paws. The squirrel was cold-painted in orange (the colour is partially preserved). Notably: there is a significant chip followed by a crack on the lid, chips at the base, and small chips on the edges and on the ears. Dimensions: 13 X 18 X 9 cm. This opaline is rare: it is a lovely collectible opaline, perfect for gifting or repurposing as a sugar bowl on your table, a ring holder, or a cotton pot in your bathroom...
