Antique Japanese folding wooden coffee table – Japan, circa 1920
Antique Japanese low table with a square wooden top and folding legs. It comes from Japan, from the Taishō period, around 1920. The top is bordered by a rim. The low table is the center of domestic life in the traditional Japanese home: meals are eaten, writing is done, and guests are received while sitting on tatami. Folding models were stored away at the end of the day to free up space. The four legs, turned in rings reminiscent of bamboo, fold under the top. The surface shows a dark red tone, with the soft grain of the wood and the regular wear of decades of use. On a rug or in a living room with low furniture, it serves as a coffee table for books and objects. Its height of twenty-eight centimeters makes it ideal at floor level. Details.
