Unique Aubusson tapestry from the mid-century by Jean Lurçat, Carton No. 13048

This rare and important tapestry from the mid-20th century was designed by Jean Lurçat (1892-1966), a major figure in the revival of modern tapestry in the 20th century. Handwoven in wool around 1950 at the famous Atelier P. Legoueix in Aubusson, it is made after the original cartoon no. 13048 by Jean Lurçat. Crafted using traditional Aubusson techniques, the tapestry transposes Lurçat's bold modernist composition onto a wool surface with a rich texture, characterised by assertive graphic forms, a rhythmic structure, and symbolic imagery, hallmarks of his mature style. The quality of execution reflects the craftsmanship of the Legoueix workshop, renowned for its significant editions of Lurçat's creations. On the reverse, the inscription "Carte A" and the handwritten signature of Jean Lurçat attest to the authenticity of the work.
