Authentic marine oil painting on canvas by the French painter Georges Capgras (Joinville-le-Pont 1866 - Paris 1947), dated 1898. A student of William Bouguereau, Gustave Moreau, and Puvis de Chavannes, Georges Capgras exhibited as early as 1899 at the Salon des artistes français. His works are held in prestigious collections: San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, Musée de l'Armée, Musée des beaux-arts de Dijon, and the Hôtel de Ville in Paris. He was also a war painter in 1918 and decorated the bedroom of King Fouad I of Egypt. The canvas depicts a coastal scene at dusk: a steamer sailing near a rocky Mediterranean coast, waves crashing against the rocks, a port city at the foot of the hills. The reverse bears the stamp of the famous Parisian colour merchant Paul Foinet (Van Eyck), Rue des Champs, a guarantee of authenticity and quality. Signed and dated at the bottom left. Presented in an ornate period wooden frame. Condition: see photos.
