Born on july 14, 1934 in mt holly, new jersey, cox studied at the katharine gibbs school of art from 1953 to 1956. He found much inspiration for his floral paintings in california and became one of the most prolific painters of the 1970s and 1980s. He used the palette knife to create his stylized flowers, often selling his paintings for little money because he believed that original art should be available to the general public so that they could enjoy art anywhere, even in their own homes. Cox was a founding member of the art workers coalition and very active in promoting artists' rights. He was awarded the brown hammerson medal of honor for services to the arts in 1986.
