Empoli is known for being a city of glass, just a few kilometers from florence, the city of the renaissance. Its history begins in the modern age, with the revolution of the storage and transport of wine: we go from wooden or terracotta containers, to glass bottles and bottles. The widespread use of glass containers – more hygienic, light and easily transportable – has been made possible by the improvement of glass melting techniques in the most important centres of val d'elsa: montaione, gambassi and empoli are home to most of the workshops of master glassmakers, many of them highly sought after by the court of the grand duke of florence.
