Magnificent antique collectible stoneware jar/casket of 2 gallons (approximately 7.5 liters), with handle, made and stamped "F. H. Cowden, Harrisburg" in Pennsylvania, in the 1880s. Rare example in Europe. The piece bears the potter's mark on the front, just below the neck, with the number "2" for 2 gallons (approximately 7.5 liters) and the mark "F.H. Cowden, Harrisburg" (mark/stamp of the maker John Wallace Cowden for the period 1880 to 1888). It features a superb cobalt blue snowflake pattern, stenciled and arranged in diamonds (see photos). The number "8" is also stamped on the bottom, which has a small hole, presumably for a lamp base, a common feature at the time (see photo). This piece is in very good overall condition, original and vintage, with some light marks, normal signs of wear and previous use for its age, and a patina, as one would expect for a piece of this age. There are a few light natural marks/pittings, probably due to the manufacturing, glazing, and firing processes. No cracks or chips (see photos). The piece is very heavy. A superb decorative collector's item. Sold as a decorative or collectible object. All photos were taken in natural light, both indoors and outdoors. Colors may therefore vary depending on the lighting, reflections, viewing angle, and perspective. Dimensions: Height: 34 cm X Diameter: 22.5 cm.
