The dancing maenads are figures from Greek mythology, worshippers of the god Dionysus (Bacchus for the Romans), depicted in a state of mystical ecstasy, divine madness, and unrestrained dance. The term maenad literally means "possessed woman" or "the one who is delirious." Who they were and what their dance meant. Divine and mortal origin: Initially, they were the nymphs who raised Dionysus. Later, the term extended to mortal women (bacchae) who joined in their orgiastic rites in the woods and mountains. The dance of ecstasy: Their dance was not a refined choreography but a trance state induced by wine, the music of drums and flutes, and the possession of the god himself. They danced until absolute physical exhaustion. Typical attributes: In artistic representations, they are recognised by their flowing light tunics, crowns of ivy or vine, fawn skins (nebris), and they carry the thyrsus (a staff topped with a pine cone).
